What is Depression?
Depression is defined as a state of being depressed. It is a normal feeling most people will feel at one time or another in their life. Major depressive disorder, or major depression, is classified as a mood disorder. It can be described as feelings of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness that can last for a few days to several weeks at a time. Depression can greatly stand in the way of a person's everyday life. It can affect people in different ways and can lead to serious health problems if not treated properly. According to Healthline, “It’s common for people to have other medical or mental health problems along with depression, such as anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, phobias, and eating disorders.”
General Symptoms Of Depression:
Physical Symptoms:
- Insomnia or oversleeping
- Debilitating fatigue
- Increased or decreased appetite
- Weight gain or loss
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Unexplained aches and pains
Emotional Symptoms:
- Feelings of sadness or emptiness for a long period of time
- Extreme irritability over seemingly minor things
- Anxiety and restlessness
- Trouble with anger management
- Loss of interest in activities
- Fixation on the past or on things that have gone wrong
- Thoughts of death or suicide
